Labios rojos (I): manual de uso/Red Lips (I): Do's and Don'ts

Los labios rojos han sido desde tiempos inmemoriales, un icono de sensualidad y una señal de salud. Muchos son los productos que han servido para este propósito, tintes, carmines, etc.

Con el paso del tiempo, los labios rojos se han convertido no sólo en una tendencia de maquillaje, sino en un elemento que está anclado en nuestro subconsciente y relacionado por tanto, con el mundo del arte, la moda e incluso la economía (lipstick factor).

Conseguir unos labios rojos perfectos tiene su técnica, como casi todo. Los pasos y técnicas de los que vamos a tratar
en esta entrada, están basados en mi experiencia como usuaria de estos productos y en todo lo que he aprendido en estos años gracias a gurús del maquillaje y lo que amigos profesionales me han ido enseñando.

Red lips have been since time immemorial, an icon of sensuality and a sign of health. Many are the products which have served to achieve this purpose, dyes, carmines, etc.

With the passing of time, the red lips have become not only a makeup tendency, but also an element which is liked to our subconscious and so related to the Arts, fashion and even Economy (lipstick factor).

Achieving the perfect red lips has its technique, as in almost anything. The steps and techniques we are going to deal with in this post are based on my own experience as user of these products and on what makeup gurus and professional friends have been teaching me over the years.

Los pasos para conseguir unos labios rojos perfectos son:

The steps to achieve perfect red lips are:

1- Elige tu color.
Como cualquier producto, la barra de labios debe favorecernos. Dentro de la gama de colores del rojo, los hay de diferentes tonalidades, acabados, texturas y niveles de hidratación.

Para probar un producto es conveniente que lo hagáis en el labio. El color del dorso de la mano, no es para nada el color natural de vuestros labios, que es donde realmente se va a aplicar el producto.

Normalmente hay una regla, los rojos anaranjados (que tienen una base más amarilla) dicen que favorecen más a las rubias y que los más azulados (que tiran más a rosa) favorecen a las morenas y en general a todo tipo de piel.

Muchos maquilladores expertos juegan con varias tonalidades de rojo hasta conseguir el color deseado.

Otra posibilidad es neutralizar el color del labio utilizando un poco de corrector, sobre un tono más neutral, el rojo se ve inalterable con respecto a la barra.

Cuando elijáis vuestro color tened en cuenta también lo siguientes aspectos:

- Vuestra edad: los burdeos y tonos oscuros tienden a envejecer. Además endurecen las facciones. Si pretendéis conseguir esto último, es decir, haceros un look rock, vais por el buen camino.

- El tamaño de los labios: los rojos oscuros empequeñecen los labios, los más claros los aumentan.

- El estado de vuestros dientes: al maquillar los labios en rojo estamos dirigiendo todas las miradas hacia ese punto de la cara, si vuestros dientes están torcidos, etc. Quizás sea mejor optar por otro look.
Recordad también que los rojos con una base anaranjada pueden crear el efecto óptico de dientes amarillos.

1-Pick your color.
As in anything, the lipstick must suit us. Within the red colour range, we can find different hues, textures, finishes and levels of hydratation.

To try a product, it is desirable that you do it on your lips. The skin colour of the back of your hand has nothing to do with the natural colour of your lips, which is where the product is going to be applied.

There is normally a rule: the reds with orange undertones suit better to blondes and the reds with blue undertones (are similar to pinks) suit the brunettes and all kinds of skin types.

Many senior makeup artists mix up different tonalities of red to achieve the perfect colour.

Another possibility is to neutralize the natural colour of the lips with some concealer, so that the red resembles more the colour in the lipstick and remains fast.

When you pick your red you should take into account the following:

- Your age: the dark reds and burgundies may make you look older. Besides, they could make your features look harder. If you want this, that is, a dramatic rock look, it is perfect.

- The size of your lips: dark reds make your lips look smaller, light reds make them look bigger.

- The state of your denture: when we are making up the lips in red, we are directing the centre of attention to this part of the face, if your teeth are not straight, etc. maybe it could be more appropriate to choose another kind of look.
Remember that reds with an orange undertone can also create the optical effect of yellow teeth.

2- Elige el acabado.
Mejor las barras hidratantes. Mate o brillantes, da igual, dependerá de vuestro gusto. Generalmente las brillantes crean un efecto óptico de aumento, así que serán fabulosas para labios más pequeños.

2- Choose the finish.
Moisturizing lipsticks are preferred. Matte or shiny, it’s the same, it will depend on your taste. Generally, the shiny ones create an optical effect of enlargement, so they will be excellent for smaller lips.

3- Prepara tus labios.
Unos labios rojos tienen que ser impecables. Para conseguirlos, tienes que exfoliarlos e hidratarlos. Hay centenares de técnicas y productos en el mercado, desde los más caseros (exfoliar pasando un cepillo de dientes) hasta mascarillas y bálsamos labiales.

Para conseguir que duren más, es conveniente también aplicar una prebase. Tengo entendido que la de MAC es fantástica.

3- Condition your lips.
Red lips must be flawless. To achieve this, you must have to exfoliate and moisturize them. There are hundreds of techniques and products available, from the home remedies (exfoliate using a toothbrush) to lip masks and lip balms.

To make them last longer, it is advisable to apply a primer too. As far as I know, MAC one’s is awesome.

4- El perfilador cuenta.

Como para casi cualquier look, el perfilador es importante, no sólo nos va a ayudar a mantener a raya la barra de labios e impedir que se corra, sino que también va a hacer que la permanencia sea mayor.

Muchos especialistas utilizan el perfilador en todo el labio antes de aplicar el color y luego aplican la justa cantidad de producto sobre el labio. Yo he usado esta técnica y es fantástica, pero aseguraros que el color del perfilador es el mismo que el de la barra, si no, éste puede verse alterado.

Para perfilar un labio rojo, tendremos que limitarnos a hacerlo sobre la línea natural del labio, no podemos ir más allá.

Mirad, un día entre en Sephora y probé un rojo de Dior, yo ya tenía el de Diorific (013- Rouge Bingo), pero me parecía demasiado oscuro, y el tono, al ser mas azulado (más fucsia) como que no me llenaba.

La chica me perfiló los labios, y ahí comenzó el error, lo hizo un poco por fuera de mi línea natural. Esto es algo que normalmente se hace y no tiene por qué quedar mal si es “un ligero perfilado por fuera” y “con cualquier barra”, pero no, con un rojo, no.
No, porque parece que vienes de beberte una litrona entera de la misma botella.
Queda horrible, al poco se empiezan a marcar las líneas de expresión, el rojo se corre, etc.

Y lo más triste es que no me atreví a quitármelo, no fuese a ser que acabara pareciendo que me habían dado una paliza.

Salí de la tienda y me piropeó un viejo verde “¡qué labios tienes, ‘miarma’!” y pensé “¡estoy muerta! Este es el fin de mi corta vida fashionista”.

4- The lip liner matters.
As in any look, the lip liner is important, not only is it going to prevent the lip liner to bleed, but also it is going to make it last longer.

Many senior artists use the lip liner on the whole lips and then, they apply the necessary amount of lipstick. I have personally used this technique and it is awesome, but make sure the colours of both lipstick and lip liner match, otherwise the colour can be affected.

To line red lips, you must do it on the natural line of your lips, we can’t go beyond.

One fine day I was in Sephora to try a new Dior red lipstick, I already had the Diorific 013 (Rouge Bingo), but it seem too dark to me and I didn’t like much the blue undertone to it.

The shop assistant lined my lips, and hence the big mistaje, when she did it a little bit beyond my natural line. This is something normal and does not have to look awful if it “is a barely noticeable line outside” and with “any lipstick colour”, but no, not with carmine.
No because you look like you’ve drank a litre of beer directly from the bottle.

It looks awful, soon you’ll have the wrinkles filled in with carmine, the lipstick bleeds, etc.
It is sad to admit, but I didn’t dare to remove it, just in case I looked like I had been beaten up.

I went out of the store and a dirty old man said “gorge, what lips you have!” and I thought “I’m dead, this is the end of my short life as a trendy girl”

5- Pinceles arriba.
Las barras de labios generalmente, es mejor aplicarlas con pincel. Primero porque al frotar el pincel sobre la barra, estamos calentando las ceras y mejorando su textura. Segundo, porque la aplicación es más precisa y así evitamos errores y exceso de producto.

Recomiendo los pinceles de Dior, vienen en el mismo formato que el perfilador, con lo cual es un dos en uno, y tienen bastante calidad, aparte de ser muy prácticos.

5- Brushes up!
It is better to apply a lipstick with a lip brush. First because when we rub it on the lipstick we are warming the ceramids and improving its texture. Second, because the application is more precise and so we avoid the excess of product.

I recommend the ones by Dior, they come in the same format than the lipstick, so it’s two in one, excellent quality and practical.

6- Prepara el corrector.
Ten a mano una brocha de corrector plana (mejor sintética), para aplicar maquillaje en caso de que nos salgamos.

6- Prepare the concealer.
Have a concealer flat brush (better synthetic) at hand, to apply makeup or concealer in case you draw an imperfect line.

7- Equilibra el rostro.
Hay una regla no escrita que dice “si destacas los ojos, deja los labios naturales” (y viceversa), a no ser que busques un efecto de impacto y muy dramático.

7- Balance the face features.
There is a non-written rule that says “if you make the eyes pop up, make a natural look for the lips” (and viceversa) unless you want a dramatic, shocking look.
